Of Jashub's army he killed 1, men comp. Great exploits were performed by him at Hazar and Gaash, where he was the first to jump upon the wall and create havoc among the enemy.
Wayissa'u describes also the battle between the children of Jacob and those of Esau, in which the chief part was taken by Judah. When Judah interfered in behalf of Benjamin Gen. The following incidents may be mentioned: When Joseph retained Benjamin, Judah shouted so loudly that Hushim, the son of Dan, who was in Canaan at a distance of parasangs from him, heard his voice. Hushim came immediately to Egypt, and with Judah desired to destroy the land. In the "Sefer ha-Yashar" it is stated that Judah lifted a stone weighing shekels, threw it into the air, and finally ground it to dust with his foot.
He then told Naphtali to count the districts of Egypt, and when the latter reported that there were twelve of them, he said to his brothers: "I take three for myself and let each one of you take one, and we shall destroy the whole of Egypt. Because Judah had pledged himself to bring Benjamin back to his father, saying, "If I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever" Gen. Judah's name was engraved on the emerald in the high priest's breastplate Num.
This distinction was given to the tribe of Judah as a reward for its zeal in glorifying God at the passage of the Red Sea. When the children of Israel were about to cross, a dispute arose among the tribes, each desiring to be the first to enter the water.
In Ex. According to R. Judah, the Temple was erected on Judah's land—another reward to the tribe Gen. The people of Judah are said to have been versed in the Law "bene Torah" , because in the wilderness the tribe was placed on the east side of the camp Num. It seems that the soil of Judah's territory was remarkable for the excellent quality of its grain, one measure of Judean grain being worth five measures of that produced in Galilee B. The reason given for the transportation into captivity of the tribe of Judah is that it was a punishment for intemperance Gen.
It is very generally maintained by recent criticism that Judah is simply the eponymous ancestor of the tribe of that name, and that the narrative in Genesis gives the history of the tribe in the form of personal history see Judah, Tribe of. It is worthy of note, however, that the thirty-eighth chapter of Genesis, which is held to give an account of the various clans which united to form the tribe, under the figure of the marriages, etc.

In Genesis , it was Judah who saw an Ishmaelite caravan passing them at that moment.
The said caravan was bound for Egypt , and Judah suggested that instead of killing Joseph, he should be sold as a slave to this group of people. He believed it was better to gain profit from selling Joseph, which the other brothers took as a wise suggestion. Unique Circular Format — see more in less space. Limited Time Offer! He soon had three children named Er, Onan, and Shelah. When Er died after marrying Tamar, Onan took her in based on what was the custom that prevailed during that time. However, Onan died, and before his death, he refused to have any children with Tamar. Based on the custom, Tamar had a choice to marry Shelah, yet Judah was against it. However, Tamar decided to trick Judah by disguising herself as a prostitute. Upon discovering that he was tricked, Judah attempted to have Tamar killed, but what stopped him from doing so was the revelation that he was the father of the unborn child.
After Joseph had been sold as a slave, he experienced great fortunes in the land of Egypt. When the brothers came to Egypt, they did not recognize at first that it was Joseph whom they were speaking with. An incident happened during their visit, and Simeon was told to remain as a hostage. Judah spoke to Jacob and assured his father that Benjamin would be kept safe during their return to Egypt. However, another incident occurred, and Joseph ordered for Benjamin to stay in Egypt as his slave.
Judah, who was responsible for Benjamin, decided to plead by taking the place of their youngest brother instead, until Joseph finally revealed his real identity upon discovering that his brothers have changed for the better.
I see Judah as a type of the believer. Joseph being a type of Christ, and his exhaltation a picture of the ascended Christ, yet unrevealed to Judah. Judah with his past sins, takes responsibility for them for Tamar also earlier , and lays his own life down for Benjamin.
It is then that Joseph reveals himself, as Christ does to the believer, as he or she lays her own life down for Christ! I see him as being a rat, he took up with what he thought was a prostitute then found out she was pregnant and was going to have her killed for being immoral.
