Is this normal for an online reconfiguration? Is this indicative of the amount of time it would take to rebuild the array should a drive fail? Is it possible to force an offline reconfiguration of the array? Assuming that would speed things up. Edit: Thanks for the responses. I'll test this out by unplugging a drive and seeing how long it takes to rebuild.

It should take some hours to reconfigure online. The exact time should be the size of the disc divided by the throughput of a single drive plus some small overhead. With active usage the small overhead would transform to a bigger overhead. But 24 hours with no progress is too long. Yes you can estimate that this is the exact time needed in case of a recovery.

Such a disk change notification can be the result of hard drive failure, or one or two of the RAID drives going offline, depending on the RAID configuration.

Before deciding to initialize the existing RAID array, please take a moment to consider the consequences. If you decide to initialize you will lose all existing data on the RAID array. It may be prudent to try other steps first to repair the failed array. Check on the Tested Hardware and Operating System list which firmware the hard drive was validated with by Intel.

If there is a different firmware version on your hard disk, check with the manufacturer, what the differences between these firmware versions are.
